Poe Dameron’s Scarface Guavian Connection!

As one of the leads of the new Star Wars sequel trilogy, Oscar Isaac’s face is everywhere these days yet his character in The Force Awakens has remained a mystery… until now. Keep reading as we dig deep to uncover the truth behind Poe Dameron’s facial scars and his Cuban Guavian connection!

During Act 1 of The Force Awakens hotshot X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron is sent on a secret mission by Leia and the Resistance. He is to retrieve Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber on Jakku. Unfortunately, Kylo Ren is after the very same thing, and quickly captures Poe, but not before BB-8 hightails it into the woods with the prized possession.

The Force on a horse, of course, of course…
This infuriates Kylo, who then storms into the village and questions the Vicar (played by Max von Sydow.) The darksider doesn’t like what he hears, and proceeds to murder the respected leader and burn down the entire village. The villagers put up a fight, eventually killing a friend of Finn’s, but they’re no match for The First Order flametroopers. During the chaos, however, Finn (John Boyega) lets some villagers escape, drawing the ire of his mentor Captain Phasma.
Guavian Enforcers Enforcing a Hallway
Poe is taken prisoner as The First Order troops return to their Star Destroyer. Captain Phasma gives Finn a stern talking to regarding his shortcomings on the battlefield. Meanwhile Poe is delivered to the brig, where he joins several other prisoners. One of the fellow inmates recognizes the Resistance pilot and conspires to murder him in the cell. The attempt is thwarted by Poe’s quick reflexes as he dodges a knife attack and turns the blade on his attacker.
Ducain and the Irving Boys
The would-be assassin is revealed to be one of the Irving Boys (of Ducain and the Irving Boys.) As soon as the thug goes down though two Guavian Enforcers also charge Poe. Once again, Poe uses the blade on his attackers, stabbing the cyborg soldiers in their circular red faces. Just when the X-Wing pilot thinks everyone in the brig is out for his blood, applause breaks out in the cell.
The Raid trio as KanjiKlub gangmembers
A group of KanjiKlub gang members appear out of the shadows. They’re very appreciative of Poe’s efforts in the cell as the Irving Boys and the Guavians are their biggest rivals on Jakku. The gang makes Poe an honorary member, giving him the traditional mark for his courageous actions. Killing the two Guavians earns Poe a pair of tear tattoos near his right eye, while taking out an Irving Boy gets Poe a traditional Kanji slash over his left eye.

While mayhem ensues in the brig, Finn is having a quarter-life crisis all his own. He’s witnessed the horrors of The First Order firsthand, and seen his friend pass away in front of him. Finn makes a decision to defect and start a new life… but how to get off this Star Destroyer?! Then he remembers the Resistance pilot they captured, and forms a plan.
Daniel Craig performed his own stunts
Finn rescues Poe from the brig in exchange for the pilot getting them both off the Star Destroyer in a stolen TIE Fighter. They barely make it out alive as The First Order opens fire on the rogue ship, sending it crashing to Jakku. Poe loses consciousness at the controls, forcing Finn to eject.
After recovering, the former First Order soldier follows the smoke to the remains of the TIE Fighter. He finds the fighter but no sign of Poe, only some of his clothes. Finn takes his jacket.

As it turns out, Poe is taken into safety by a group of KanjiKlub gangmembers. The crew were intent on scavenging the ship and killing whomever was on board, but they noticed the tattoos on Poe’s face. The gangmembers immediately took the pilot to one of their hideouts, where he could recover.

During his recovery, Poe learns many secrets of the KanjiKlub. He even gets to visit their hidden warehouse of stolen goods, including equipment and technology from both the Resistance and The First Order. Poe’s most keen on an elite black TIE Fighter he spies in the rear of the warehouse. He convinces the KanjiKlub to let him borrow it as The First Order would surely be attacking any minute now.

“Say hello to my little friend”
Later when General Hux orders the destruction of Rose’s pub (Maz Kanata’s pirate bar), Poe does a flyover the area and takes out most of the other TIE Fighters before they can attack people running out of the pub. Guess who’s one of those people? That’s right, Finn! Poe and Finn are reunited.
That’s all the new information we have on Poe Dameron for the moment. Though here are a trio of fun nuggets for you:
  • The KanjiKlub was named after Kathleen Kennedy
  • The Guavian Enforcers are named after Guava pastries — a cheeky reference to Oscar Isaac’s Cuban ancestry
  • Both the Guavian Enforcers and Oscar Isaac sport scars like the fictional Cuban gangster Tony Montana from Brian De Palma’s classic Scarface film
