Harrison Ford’s Force for Change Stunt CG?
Yesterday Disney released a new Force for Change video with Harrison Ford surprising a few lucky donors via Skype. Ford is happy and effervescent in the clip, but we’ve just learned the shocking truth behind his sudden change in demeanor. Hit the jump to be Omazed at the truth behind Force for Change’s stunt with Ford.
Yesterday’s YouTube video was meant to be a “viral” way to announce a new Force for Change promotion: now anyone who donates $10 or more to the campaign (which goes towards charities selected by the stars and filmmakers behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will be entered into a raffle where two winners will receive four tickets each to the film’s premiere.
So what better way to drum up some interest than by surprising people who’ve already donated to the cause. Unfortunately for Omaze (the org. in charge of overseeing donations) tapping the stars of the film to appear was an insurmountable challenge.
Mark Hamill was busy doing mocap work for an upcoming PC game. Carrie Fisher was suffering from exhaustion after post-production on The Force Awakens. And the newer stars flat-out refused to participate, claiming their social media appearances were used to project “hip” personas which would never in a million lightyears align with a “lame charity video.”
So with great trepidation the team approached the infamously grumpy Harrison Ford. To their surprise, he agreed to appear in the video, but under one condition. Cue “bad feeling” line.
Ford lent his likeness to the stunt but insisted on being entirely CG. The actor mailed a bag filled with scruff shavings and a diamond earring to ILM, who immediately began work on a lifelike model.
If you watch the video closely, you’ll notice a sheen in Ford’s eyes along with much more life-like rapid movements than what the human version is capable of. Ford joked and told everyone his Replicant self needed to be ready for Blade Runner 2 anyway.
What do you think? Can you spot the telltale signs that give the CG away? The “surprised” donors in the video couldn’t tell that’s for sure. Of course, we’re also hearing they were paid actors, so that may have something to do with it.
