SPECULATION: The Birthplace of Kylo Ren?
Now that we’ve all seen The Force Awakens and gotten a taste of Kylo Ren (stop reading if you want to avoid spoilers) let’s feed the need to know more by exploring his past. Kylo’s early life may give us a better idea of what the future holds for this captivating new character. After the jump, we go HAM on yesteryear to unmask Kylo Ren’s upbringing, which may have been spent in a place very familiar to us all.
We now know Kylo Ren is a title taken on by Ben Solo after he betrayed Luke Skywalker and murdered his fellow Jedi classmates at Luke’s newly formed Jedi Arts School. What we haven’t learned yet is what was Ben’s life was like before he arrived at the Jedi Academy: Where was he born? How did he spend his infant days? Did he demonstrate force abilities before he could speak?
I believe the answer to where Ben was born is right in front of our faces. If Han and Leia were still up to business as usual shortly after the events of Return of the Jedi then your best bet on the birthplace of their son is probably the Millennium Falcon itself. This may play into the story in the sequel trilogy films to come. Ben didn’t lay eyes on the ship at any point or board it, however this moment may occur in Episode VIII.
Imagine walking through the hallways of the ship where you took your first breath. Now imagine all of that emotion coupled with the fact the man piloting the ship during your youth is gone. Your father, dead by your own hand.
This could be a huge moment in Ben’s story. Could laying eyes on the med bay where he was born and hearing the ghosts of his past within the old freighter shake the dark side’s grip on Ben? What if this moment also came with the sight of his mother aboard the ship? We have seen what he is capable of and the ruthlessness that is his new identity, Kylo Ren. The Falcon appears to be under new owner ship by the end of The Force Awakens, and we have seen Ben’s anger towards Rey and her newfound abilities. Imagine the jealous rage that would ensue if he sees her wielding the Skywalker saber and claiming the Falcon as her own. I think a few walls would be in need of fixing.
There is no doubt the good son that is Ben Solo exists somewhere inside Kylo Ren, but can anyone — or anything — bring him back? The mother still longing for her lost son? Luke? Rey? The ship that belong to his father and his potential birth place? No doubt all of these questions will be answered by the end of the sequel trilogy but will they end in triumph or tragedy? We can only wait and see.
