SPECULATION: Rey is a Palpatine-Skywalker

SPOILERS AHEAD!!! Just when you think you’ve heard it all, another piece of FSW speculation rears its beautiful head! Today we bring you what is surely the most explosive theory involving the origin of Little Miss Classified herself. As it turns out Rey may be destined to turn to the Dark Side — swapping places with her born-again cousin Kylo — because of her “most unnatural” genetic makeup. Her father may be a Skywalker, but her grandpappy is Luke’s mortal enemy. After the jump, we reveal how Sheev Palpatine — The Phantom Menace — ties all three trilogies together, and sets the stage for the very “weird” things to come, according to Larry “Larr” Kasdan.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!! SPOILERS AHEAD!!! SPOILERS AHEAD!!! SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Let’s cut to the chase. Kylo Ren returns to the Light Side in Star Wars: Episode VIII. Not very surprising, but what is a bit of a curveball is how he swaps places with his cousin. Rey will fall to the Dark Side, and the entire Sequel Trilogy will end in a climactic battle between Kylo and Rey with Luke caught in the middle. More on that in a bit. First let’s answer the WTF HOW CAN REY TURN questions.

One of Rey’s forceback visions in The Force Awakens shows what appears to be Kylo Ren and his gang of Knights killing Luke’s students at the Jedi Academy. We are meant to believe Rey is recoiling in fear because she was the lone survivor of the massacre. This point is driven home (lolz) with zero subtlety as we see Kylo murder one of his own, presumably a Knight intent on killing Rey.

The big twist is that Rey is horrified not because she was almost killed, but rather because of the death and destruction she caused by her own hand. It will be revealed in Episode VIII that Rey led the massacre, not Kylo. That’s why Luke performed a mindwipe on her and punished her by leaving her in the hands of Unkar on Jakku.

If you watch The Force Awakens with a careful eye like me, you can see clues as Rey’s hatred and rage begin to take shape. Most notably in three sequences: when she uses the Force to fight Kylo’s mind probe and turns the tables on him; when she picks up the lightsaber after telling Maz Kanata she never wanted to touch it again; and when she is firing her blaster at Kylo Ren over and over again with a face that would make her grandfather proud.

Also of note and very telling: Rey’s accent and her fighting style. She speaks with a Coruscant accent — very proper for a scavenger. Rey also fights with a very aggressive, hate-fueled style, using a lightsaber spear technique made famous by her mother’s father, Emperor Palpatine.

Sheeva and her father Sheev

Now let’s back up and tell Luke’s tale of love and woe: 10 years after the Battle of Endor, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker took a sabbatical from rebuilding the Jedi Academy. He traveled to the Outer Rim for some much needed R&R. On his very first night there, he met a mysterious woman that captivated him. Skywalker hadn’t felt this much attraction since the days he pined for his then-uknown-to-him sister, Leia.

The woman was named Sheeva and to say she and Skywalker got in on hot and heavy would be an understatement. It appears the Jedi was making up for lost time as they feasted on each other and rarely left his swank digs. Their passion was so strong, neither questioned each other’s background or whether a Jedi should be engaging in such activities. They were madly in love, but Skywalker was needed back at the Academy. So they parted but promised to stay in touch.

Artist rendering of Sheeva minutes before Skywalker impregnated her with their daughter in a bubble bath.

Unfortunately, Skywalker began to have Force visions that revealed Sheeva’s true origins. She was the first-born daughter of Sheev Palpatine, the man who manipulated Anakin Skywalker and turned him into a monster. This secret love affair was doomed. As much as he loved Sheeva, the last Jedi Master in the galaxy had to end his relationship with her. Skywalker couldn’t even bring himself to tell her the truth, however, relying on the “It’s not you, it’s me” line that he’d seen work in romantic comedies.

Sheeva fantasized about getting married to Skywalker, but it was never meant to be.

Sheeva, who was still reeling from her father’s death a decade earlier at the hands of the Rebels, was distraught. Her father kept her hidden on a remote planet, so she never knew the names and identities of the Rebellion’s most lauded heroes. It seems fate has a wicked sense of humor.

Months went by, and Luke finally received a letter affixed to a small escape pod. The handwritten note from Sheeva told Skywalker she was dying from a broken heart, but there was still hope for their love — inside the escape pod was their newborn daughter, Bathsheeva.

Skywalker was in tears and blamed himself for Sheeva’s loss. He was determined to make good on his true love’s dying wish. He would raise their daughter, and show her the ways of the Force. In Luke’s mind, Bathsheeva represented the ultimate balance of the Force. She held the key to intergalactic peace and mastery of the Force.

Bathsheeva could never go by her birthname, so Luke renamed her Rey. The babe showed immense Force-sensitivity immediately. In fact, Skywalker believed the infant used the Force to override the auto pilot on the escape pod and input new coordinates for his Jedi Academy.

Rey would grow up with her cousin Kylo. The two would be Skywalker’s star pupils at his rebuilt Jedi Academy. Of course, even the best laid plans…

The speculation above serves to connect all three trilogies with Sheev Palpatine as the glue NOT Darth Plagueis. It also sets in motion a wonderful conflict for the Sequel Trilogy. Bathsheeva (Rey) will likely rise to be Lord Snoke’s second-in-command then betray him to take back the galaxy that belonged to her grandfather. Once Rey becomes leader of The First Order however, her father and her cousin will need to work together in order to either turn her back to the Light Side or destroy her.

What do you think of the theory above? Do you think Rey (Bathsheeva) will bust out Palpatine’s signature Sheev Spin in Episode IX? Tell us in the comments!
