Exclusive: Why Rogue One Trailer Was Pulled from Super Bowl
After the Superbowl 50 ended last night (go Broncos!) a new report was leaked stating that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was supposed to have a trailer play during one of the commercial breaks. As it turns out, there were several “difficulties” with the trailer leading to Disney/Lucasfilm pulling it at the last minute. The highly coveted :30 slot went to Dorito’s initially rejected creepy ultrasound ad instead. After the jump we look into why the trailer was pulled and when we should expect to see it.
WHY WAS THE ROGUE ONE TRAILER PULLED FROM SUPERBOWL 50?
One reason is that the Coldplay song that was meant to go with the trailer was performed live by the band (even though their stage was taken over by Beyoncé and Bruno Mars) ignoring the fact that Disney paid for exclusive rights to use it for the trailer. Coldplay’s latest single “Adventure of a Lifetime” was set to provide an ambient backdrop to the rushing visuals of the trailer and tie into the characters of Rogue One going on “an adventure of a lifetime.” Due to the band performing it just a few minutes before in the halftime show, Disney pulled the plug.
But the main reason the trailer was removed was due to the CGI Grand Moff Tarkin. Apparently ol’ Wilhuff was just not looking the way director, Gareth Edwards was wanting. According to an insider who is close to production, “Tarkin is looking a little to much like Paulie Shore right now. They really should just get that guy from Episode III back.” Pauly Shore is a close friend of FakingStarWars so we asked if he had been approached by Lucasfilm for a 3D scan of his “weasel-ness” to be used for Tarkin. Shore, fresh from appearing as himself in the season premiere of the Comedy Central stoner comedy Workaholics had this to say, “Something incoherent. The WEASEL! Something inaudible.”
Our sources think Tarkin will be baked enough by spring for the trailer to drop online May the 4th and in theaters tied to Captain America: Civil War on the 6th.
Are you glad Disney decided not to air the trailer, so they can touch up Tarkin some more or are you pissed because you wanted more Star Wars NOW? Let us know in the comments and in our new message board, Faking Fandom Forums!
