Casual Fans Confused By Lack of Rey and Kylo Ren in Rogue One Trailer
Hours after the drop of Lucasfilm’s latest Rogue One offering to the fans, there are still a select few that are confused by the lack of key characters from the last Star Wars film, The Force Awakens. Tylor Copper-Fieldman, a friend of FSW who lives and works in Goblu, Ohio, shared the trailer with a pair of female, casual fan, co-workers who immediately asked, “Wait, where is Rey?” upon completion of the second trailer for Rogue One. After Copper-Fieldman explained that the film takes place prior to George Lucas’s original film, one co-worker said, “In my mind, the eighth film comes after the seventh not three and a half! What is this?!”
This isn’t the only instance of confusion due Disney/Lucasfilm failing to market the film as a spin-off/anthology film to the casual market. One reader, Cynthia Horowitz of Agloe, New York, told FSW that her husband was also baffled by the lack of Kylo Ren, Finn, and Poe Dameron in the “eighth” Star Wars film’s trailers. Like Copper-Fieldman’s story, Horowitz’ ended the same way. Horowitz’ husband said;
“Well that’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. There was no indication that [Rogue One is] a spin-off film. There was a “Death Star,” a “Darth Vader,” and stormtroopers in Episode VII. How the heck is anyone, besides the f**king uber nerds, supposed to know this movie takes place prior to the first film without them telling us in the trailer?”
FSW was alerted to a similar tale, this time across the pond by Angus O’Harrington of Argleton, Lancashire, UK. His daughters were mislead to think Rogue One was indeed a sequel to The Force Awakens. Being huge fans of Rey and BB-8 they asked their father if the young girl at the beginning was Rey. When O’Harrington explained it was Jyn Erso they asked why Rey and BB-8 weren’t in the trailer either. O’Harrington told his daughters those characters won’t be in the film, which resulted in the two young girls NOT wishing to see the film when it releases in a few months.
Disney and Lucasfilm need to make sure that all moviegoers know what they are in store for come December or they will have a lot of angry fans. Heck, even one of FSW’s many interns didn’t know Rogue One was a spin-off set prior to A New Hope and we are sure that there are even some reading this article that didn’t know until we told you!
