George Lucas to Direct Dune for Legendary, Zack Snyder Producing
BURBANK, CALIFORNIA — It appears his small experimental film phase is over as George Lucas is set to helm a Dune film adaptation for Legendary Films. After selling Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012, the iconic creator of Star Wars and Howard the Duck had been focusing on his museum, family life and personal films. But according to FSW sources, Lucas leapt at the opportunity to direct Dune because he’s a huge Frank Herbert fan, and he feels the entire film industry — Disney included — is missing the boat on what Lucas describes as “the modern hero mythos.”
Apparently visionary director Zack Snyder gets it though, as Lucas announced the DC film veteran would be producing his nine film adaptation of Dune Book One. (OH. MY. ZOD!)
“I spoke with Rick McCallum and we agreed today’s films need to be as dark as they are dense or modern filmgoers will just tune it out. I think people are ready for a darker, more brooding George Lucas. His films as well.”
Snyder let slip that Lucas is in talks with Force Awakens star Oscar Isaac to play Paul Atreides. The Snyderverse creator also mentioned that Isaac is thrilled at the opportunity to work with Lucas — a real director, not some nostalgia pandering journeyman hack. Ouch.
While Lucas denied our request for an interview, Mousy McCallum, a covert FSW correspondent located in the Czech Republic, mentioned she overheard an excited Lucas tell her father:
“Ima CG the f$&@ outta those sand worms, its going to make practical effects looks like string puppets.”
Spies tell us Legendary Films has given Lucas and team a literal blank check to realize their vision. Spirits are running high as pre-production on Dune gets underway. Snyder even went on record to promise the 9 films will be done before Avatar 3 hit cinemas.
I think I speak for everyone when I say it’s great to have The Maker back directing a story worthy of his talents.
