Bad Boy Sues Disney Lucasfilm Over Rogue One Space Tunnel
Despite being a massive financial success, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is proving to be a legal nightmare for Disney Lucasfilm. Not only has the spinoff film spurred a class action lawsuit for false advertising, it is now the subject of a copyright infringement suit filed by Bad Boy Entertainment.
According to attorneys for Bad Boy CEO Sean “Diddy” Combs, Rogue One violated the copyright on a space tunnel seen in the music video for 1997’s Mo Money Mo Problems by the late Notorious B.I.G. featuring Combs & Mase. Combs had this to say in an interview held at Bad Boy Records NYC headquarters.
“Bruh, they can’t straight up jack Biggie’s tunnel. We coming off our 20th anniversary… and we gon’ get it poppin’ in the court. No doubt, we gittin’ some of dat Mickey paper.”
Star Wars fans across social media are speculating that Lucasfilm may have purposely shelved the space tunnel scene featuring Jyn Erso. This after Rogue One director Gareth Edwards’ Pinterest board was accidentally set to public, revealing a board titled ‘Bad Girl Jyn Scene’ filled entirely with imagery from Bad Boy music videos and album covers from the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Ironically enough, Rogue One isn’t the first media vehicle to steal Bad Boy’s intellectual property. “Weird Al” Yankovic’s music video for It’s All About the Pentiums also featured a replica of the very same space tunnel set. The musical comedian’s niche fanbase may have saved him, however, as Bad Boy likely deemed a lawsuit against him to be a waste of resources that wouldn’t amount to much compensation in the end. Besides that, Yankovic would have been protected under parody laws.
FSW reached out to Disney and Lucasfilm as well as Yankovic, all of which declined to comment for this story.
