George Lucas Launches Probe into 1978 Best Picture Oscar Results

Probe droids examining the 89th Academy Awards Best Picture winner to compare to their findings in 1978.

The dust has yet to settle on the 89th Academy Awards, but there’s already been major fallout stemming from the Best Picture fiasco wherein the cast & crew of La La Land were mistakenly awarded Golden statuettes that didn’t belong to them. After two speeches by producers, telecast staff members finally told several people onstage that they were not in fact winners. Bewildered presenter Warren Beatty was in total shock as it finally came to light that Moonlight has actually won the award.

The mixup has several people questioning the Academy’s process wondering whether or not other mixups haven’t also occurred in years past. Not a big deal, right? Unless of course one of those people happens to be a billionaire filmmaker by the name of George Lucas.

It’s been nearly 40 years since the original Star Wars lost out to Annie Hall for Best Picture, but Lucas hasn’t lost hope that it may have all been a mixup.

“Jack Nicholson presented the results. If you think Warren Beatty is easily confused, imagine a sunglasses wearing megalomaniac like Jack! I love him to death, but there is no way he actually read what was on that card,” said Lucas through a friend of a friend of a friend of FSW. According to the creator of Star Wars, Annie Hall is not the real Best Picture Oscar Winner of 1978 — and he’s putting his money where his mouth is.

This morning, Lucas launched a series of probe droids to investigate the authenticity of the 50th Annual Academy Awards. We’re told the droids have already obtained a signed statement from Nicholson claiming he didn’t have a clue what was going on then, and he certainly doesn’t know what’s going on now.

It remains to be seen whether other filmmakers follow Lucas’ lead in pursuit of Oscar justice. We just hope no one comes after Suicide Squad‘s Best Hair & Makeup Oscar.
