Bad Robot to Produce Cinematic Goonieverse
After 30+ years, it seems fans of Richard Donner’s 1985 cult classic film The Goonies are finally getting their wish. FSW has learned that J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot Productions are in talks to take the reins on the long dormant property and reboot it with a sequel along with several spin-off films that occur within the same shared “Goonieverse.”
The Goonies sequel will things off, picking up 30 years after the events of the fan-favorite film. According to our source, several of the original cast members are slated to return, including Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, and Sean Astin. The highly guarded plot revolves around the next generation of Goonies, who have their own ocean-faring adventure on the hunt for One-Eyed Willy’s treasures.
According to executive producer Abrams: “Goonies 2 will serve as a bridge – a reminder if you will – to what made the original so great, but it needs to be established with something familiar, with a sense of where we are going… new mysteries and new pirate adventures. I want to sort of reclaim the original story, so we’re consciously borrowing familiar beats, so the rest of the movie could hang on something we knew was The Goonies.”
No word on which new faces are being looked at to carry the torch for the treasure-hunting tweenagers of Astoria, Oregon, but we’re told several Disney Channel up-and-comers are in the running. It’s also been made clear to our source that the “Goon Docks” has changed significantly, and the new cast will reflect greater diversity and representation of a multitude of cultures, genders, and faiths.
Of course, Goonies 2 is just the beginning. Bad Robot is planning at least one Cinematic Goonieverse event every two years. Among the films planned are One Fratelli Lane, a prequel featuring the origin story of the Fratelli gang with not one but two groundbreaking all-CG characters: ILM is working on digitally reviving Anne Ramsey to ride again as a younger, more badass version of Mama Fratelli, plus a baby Sloth that is said to rival Baby Groot in the cute overload department. Other films being considered for the Goonie-verse include Booby Trap Inc. – an action comedy following the misadventures of Data and his inventions – along with The Fratelli’s vs. Home Alone – a crossover event featuring a child left home alone and under siege by everyone’s favorite organized crime family gang. Wow! That’s a whole lotta Goonie.
We hope the all-new Cinematic Goonieverse proves well worth the 30-year wait. Going by Abrams’ reboot track record, we’re certainly in for something that at least feels like the first Goonies film… which may be enough to satisfy those pangs of nostalgia, and garner a profit. Truffle Shuffle!
