Disney to Re-release Original Trilogy as Dark and Light Side Edition
San Francisco, CA — To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Star Wars, Disney has announced a re-release of the Original Trilogy like never seen before — in 4K black & white. The special Blu-Ray transfer, which will be marketed as Star Wars: The Dark & Light Side Edition, is being overseen by acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh. No stranger to the process, Soderbergh was personally selected by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, because of his amazing work on a black & white edit of Raiders of the Lost Ark. A company spokesperson did not disclose whether or not the director would be removing sound effects or replacing any of John William’s score the way he did on his Raiders edit.
Lucasfilm’s announcement is the latest entry in a subgenre that’s picked up steam over the last few years. What began in earnest with Fury Road: Black and Chrome Edition from Warner Bros. has continued with several other studios offering up their “modern-day geek classics” in black & white, including Twentieth Century Fox’s Logan. So it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to finally see the grandaddy of modern-day blockbusters receive the same treatment. While some fans will inevitably be disappointed that Lucasfilm did not announce a re-release of the unaltered Star Wars trilogy, this may actually be more interesting, considering there are versions of the original films out there, depending on how hard you look.
In any case, expect to see Star Wars in an all-new light when the Original Trilogy: Dark & Light Side Edition lands sometime in the Fall of 2017.
