Chewbacca Mom Receives 15 More Minutes of Fame for Mother’s Day
GRAND PRAIRIE, TEXAS — A local news station ran a segment on Chewbacca Mom for Mother’s Day, which immediately thrust 38-year old Candace Payne back into the spotlight. If you recall, the mother of two became a viral sensation in 2016 for “laughing it up,” while wearing a voice-activated Chewbacca mask. Well, we’re glad to report she’s still got what it takes — and then some. In the news segment, Payne personifies “Fame” while wearing her Chewbacca mask, an ode to the narrative device she uses in her forthcoming book, Laugh It Up: Embrace Freedom and Experience Defiant Joy.
“It’s the best piece of Star Wars-related performance art I’ve ever seen. The fact that it works on a meta level puts it over the top. She literally talks about her fame as Chewbacca Mom for 15 minutes. We’re already seeing huge numbers in Lubbock,” said Grand Prairie News producer Kev Nasherville.
As a result of her three 5-minute segments, Chewbacca Mom was once again trending on Twitter and Facebook over the weekend. Her Mother’s Day stunt is the first we’ve heard from Payne in over 6 months. For a short while there, it seemed as if her legacy would end with a tour of Star Wars headquarters, her own action figure, and appearances on national morning talk shows.
But it’s looking more and more like Payne devised a genius strategy of avoiding overexposure only to resurface on Mother’s Day. And boy is it paying off! As of this writing, Zondervan publishing is reporting record pre-sales for Laugh It Up, thanks to the extra 15 minutes of fame. Congrats, Chewbacca Mom!
