Rian Johnson Understands
LOS ANGELES — Director Rian Johnson took to Twitter today to allay mounting fears The Last Jedi would be a retread of The Empire Strikes Back. His tweet made it very clear that, while he would be terribly disappointed if you do not watch his Star Wars sequel in December, he completely understands. This is in stark contrast to J.J. Abrams, who still does not understand how anyone on the planet would consciously or unconsciously choose to skip out on The Force Awakens.
According to the famously inaccessible and elusive director: “I’ll never understand how anyone could say they don’t want to watch my movie when they already did, only under a different name. That’s how reboots work, friggin’ nerds.”
Fortunately, since Johnson has a better understanding of fandom’s collective fears, he probably has a better handle on the filmmaking bit, too.
The Looper helmer also candidly revealed he’s spent the last 3 years trying to avoid the reboot trap as opposed to Abrams, who has singlehandedly made a cotton industry of the practice over the course of his career.
So, on behalf of Star Wars fans everywhere: Thanks for understanding, Rian. We promise to quit tweeting anxiety ridden essays at you all day long. That’s what Pablo Hidalgo is for.
