BB-8 Earned a Bigger Salary than Daisy Ridley for The Last Jedi

Thanks to a poorly sourced news story, word has begun to spread like wild fire that the roughly $500,000 Daisy Ridley was paid for her starring role in upcoming The Last Jedi was chump change compared with her droid co-star’s alleged payment of $14 million for 2015’s The Force Awakens.

It all began when Lauren Duca, a writer for Teen Vogue, tweeted the following (now deleted) comment.

Duca’s tweet was retweeted more than 14,500 times and quickly drew attention to the story. There’s only one problem: Duca’s tweet wasn’t true.

As it turns out, BB-8 was paid roughly the same amount Ridley earned for The Force Awakens, which was said to be between $100,000 and $300,000. So the question is, why did Duca say such a thing? All it has done is create hate for droid actors, not only BB-8 but also Star Wars veteran C-3PO, Ultron of the Avengers franchise, Arthur the bartender in Passengers, and Mecha Godzilla of the upcoming Godzilla: King of Monsters.

One of our Jawa interns here at FSW did some digging and discovered Duca believes since droids are not “living-breathing” beings that they should not earn human wages for their work. While there are no laws about droid wages, most film studios pay droids human wages out of fear of being “terminated” but there are a few who only hire droids for the entire cast because they like their work ethic such as The Mummy and Transformers: The Last Knight which both released earlier this month.

What do you think of this development? Should droids earn as much as humans? Let us know in the comments below.
