Josh Trank Shares the Plot of his Cancelled Boba Fett Film
With word of a plethora of Star Wars solo spinoff movies coming out last week, Joshua Trank, director of hit films such as Big Fan, Chronicle and Fanstastic Four, has shared the plot outline of his cancelled Boba Fett spinoff with his good friends at FakingStarWars. Mr. Trank sent us a huge block of plain text in MS Notepad format so FSW has complied some bullet points from the long text dump to share with our readers.
The film is set just prior and during the events of The Empire Strikes Back and chronicles what Boba Fett was up to prior to appearing on Darth Vader’s ship in Episode V. It also seals the fate of Mace Windu, fan-favorite Jedi from the prequel films.
Characters
Trank had a character list along with actors tentatively selected for each. The list was not final but Trank was very set on these actors before leaving the project.
- Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) – Main antagonist of the film. Hired by Darth Vader to find and capture Jedi, Mace Windu.
- Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson) – A former Jedi, now living in exile on Ophuchi under the guise of Deak, a forest hermit. He no longer practices the Jedi way and uses the Force at a minimum.
- CJ Thorpe (Michael B. Jordan) – a young Force-sensitive freighter pilot of the Tarnack. He is unaware of his Force affinity. Aides Windu on his journey.
- Montross Holdaack (Tom Hardy) – CJ’s partner and former rival of Fett’s “father” Jango Fett.
- Alana Mina (Anna Wood) – CJ’s girlfriend who assists him on shipments.
- Captain Oxus (Michael Fassbender) – Secondary antagonist. Another bounty hunter trying to capture Windu.
- Dardell Thorpe (Cress Williams) – CJ’s father and owner of the Chrome Company shipping yard on Yoshiro.
- Darth Vader (voiced by James Earl Jones) – Sith Lord who hires Boba Fett to capture Mace Windu.
- 2nd Sister (Alicia Vela-Bailey) – A Sith Inquisitor.
Plot Outline
- Mace Windu is in exile on the planet Ophuchi under the guise of Deak the forest hermit. He is found and attacked by the 2nd Sister Inquisitor. He kills her and plans to leave the planet.
- Meanwhile on Kamino, Darth Vader arrives at one of the old clone facilities to meet with Boba Fett, who converted the facility into his home. Vader offers Fett a job to capture the Jedi who killed the Inquistitor: Mace Windu. Boba accepts.
- Back on Ophuchi, Deak is in a marketplace looking for transport off world, avoiding detection by stormtroopers. He meets a young man named CJ Thorpe who has no love for the Empire and hires him for travels offworld. Some thugs recognize Deak as a fugitive and assault him in the streets. Deak and Thorpe quickly board Thorpe’s ship the Tarnack and flee the planet.
- Fett arrives on Ophuchi and discovers Thorpe has taken Windu then departs.
- On the Tarnack, Deak meets Thorpe’s associates, Montross Holdaak and Alana Mina. Mace senses CJ’s connection to the Force and reveals his true identity to him. Thorpe then suggests taking Windu to Yoshiro to hide out working for his father’s company, Chrome Company Shipping. Mace agrees.
- Secondary antagonist, Captain Oxus learns about this high-profile Imperial bounty and he intends to pursue it.
- The Tarnack comes out of hyperspace at Yoshiro, but they are forced to dock with an Imperial space station to be searched. Inspection droids enter the Tarnack to check the cargo and the crew has no choice but to destroy the droids.
- Bioba had arrived at Yoshiro, a few hours prior after learning Thorpe’s identity. He is on board the space station, patiently waiting for them.
- The crew tries to disengage from the station but the dock has been locked and stormtroopers swarm the ship.
- Fett sets off an EMP causing the power to the Tarnack and the space station’s to go out.
- After they clear out the stormtroopers, they make their way through the space station to find a new ship. They arrive in a hangar and the blast doors shut behind them as Boba emerges from the shadows revealing he set a trap for them.
- Fett fights Windu, using a magnaguard staff. Montross holds Boba off and tosses him out into space, but Fett jetpacks to the Slave I parked outside the station.
- Fett starts bombing the station, which throws the Imperials into a frenzy to stop both him and the fugitives. TIE Fighters begin chasing the Slave I.
- Windu and company make it back to the Tarnack and manage to unlock the port but the ship’s systems still won’t come on.
- As Fett continues bombing the space station, the Tarknack begins to make a descent through the atmosphere of Yoshiro and Fett follows. Boba destroys the TIEs with sonic charges.
- The Tarnack crash-lands in a lake outside of Gordon City where Chrome Company Shipping is located.
- Scavengers and bounty hunters aligned with Oxus arrive at the crash site and fill the Tarknack with dioxis. They take their prisoners to Oxus’s mountain hideout but Fett is not far behind and witnesses this. Windu, Thorpe, Alana, and Montross wake up in a dungeon at Oxus’s hideout.
- Upstairs Fett meets with Captain Oxus and offers to split the bounty, but Oxus refuses and orders his guards to kill him. With the guards occupied, Thorpe reaches out to grab a security card off of a guard’s desk, but can’t reach. Windu jokingly suggests for Thorpe to use the Force. Thorpe taps into his latent ability and pulls the card to himself, much to Windu’s surprise. They escape and find their weapons nearby, but Fett has already destroyed Oxus upstairs and makes his way to the dungeon.
- Windu, Thorpe, and Alana make their way to the courtyard while Thorpe contacts his father Dardell. Montross has a rematch with Fett but is killed.
- Fett makes his way outside to catch Windu on top of the mountain. Windu ends up knocking Fett’s helmet off during the fight. He recognizes the face of Jango Fett and thinks he is a clone trooper then recalls Fett had a “son”. Boba shoots a rocket at Thorpe and he gets thrown off of the cliffside but lands on a small ledge just below as Alana rushes to help him.
- Fett knocks Windu’s lightsaber out of his hands and then begins beating him relentlessly. Fett knocks Windu off the cliff but Windu grasps the ledge with his cybernetic hand. Fett crushes Windu’s cybernetic hand beneath his boot and Windu plummets to his death. Fett fires his blaster which disintegrates Windu before he hits the water below. Boba picks up Windu’s lightsaber and his helmet then limps away leaving Thorpe and Alana.
- Alana helps Thorpe back up onto the plateau as his father arrives shooting at the Slave I. Fett ignores Thorpe’s father and leaves the atmosphere. Thorpe’s father hugs his son and that’s the last we see of them.
- Fett arrives onto the Executor and meets with Vader, giving him Windu’s lightsaber. Vader demands to know why Fett didn’t bring the body and Fett says he was forced to disintegrate the target. Vader is displeased, but impressed that he managed to best a Jedi Master anyway, and offers him a chance to collect a second bounty on Han Solo. Boba accepts and is escorted to the bridge.
