5 Star Wars Scenes That Would Be Better With Dave Filoni’s Hat
Few things in the galaxy can improve upon the space opera and father of the modern blockbuster known as Star Wars. There’s a reason Disney is sticking so close to the story beats and visuals of George Lucas’ original trilogy. It’s really, really hard to beat, especially if you’re introducing all-new characters. That said, there is a very simple and cost-effective way to make Star Wars better: toss Dave Filoni’s hat into a few scenes.
If you’re unfamiliar, Filoni is the executive producer of Star Wars Rebels and a very accomplished animator. He also happens to be BFF’s with The Maker himself. And just as Lucas is famous for his beard and flannel, Filoni is rarely ever photographed without his trusty cowboy hat. Good thing too, as early in his career Filoni would often be mistaken for SNL alumni Bobby Moynihan as well as former Howard Stern Show wack packer Artie Lange. Thanks to the cowboy hat, however, people can now spot Filoni a mile away. The hat gives him an air of mystery, danger and a passing resemblance to film director Robert Rodriguez.
By adding Filoni’s hat to Star Wars, certain scenes will get much more entertaining. Additionally, with the global box office becoming so important and studios pandering to foreign markets, it’s nice to have a visual reminder that Star Wars is an American creation. So, let’s get to it! Below are five scenes we think would benefit from Dave Filoni’s hat along with our reasons why.
Darth Vader Meditating
As scary as seeing Darth Vader’s bare naked cracked head in his meditation chamber, it would be even more memorable if the Lord of the Sith wore Dave Filoni’s cowboy hat under the helmet. Providing a second layer of protection and WTF, the cowboy hat would raise even more questions about the fallen jedi’s past. Was he an outlaw? How does the hat retain its shape under the helmet? Why is he wearing it backwards?
Lobot’s First Appearance
As Lando’s second-in-command, the silent cyborg Lobot provides a great contrast to the smooth talking Calrissian. But the reveal of his Google Brainware could have been much more dramatic had he been wearing Dave Filoni’s cowboy hat. His silence along with the hat and his trademark billowy flared sleeves would give him the appearance of a Western assassin dancer. And when was the last time you’ve seen that onscreen? Exactly. That striking image would leave you just as speechless as Lo.
Han Shoots Greedo
Forget who shot first. If Han Solo had been wearing Dave Filoni’s cowboy hat in the classic Cantina sequence from A New Hope, the only thing fans would be debating is “WHERE DID HE GET THAT HAT?!” A space Indiana Jones look would have made Solo even more of a fan-favorite sex symbol than he’s become.
Anything with BB-8
America’s favorite ball droid is cute and all, but BB-8 would be even more adorkable covered under Dave Filoni’s cowboy hat. Her headpiece would be entirely in the dark and the unsuspecting would just see a cowboy hat on a soccer ball. Imagine the lovable chaos that would ensue!
HAT-AT Attack on Hoth
Often overshadowed by the biggest cliffhanger twist ending of all time, the AT-AT attack on Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back is a high-water mark in stop-motion animation. But with a dozen or so Dave Filoni cowboy hats, the sequence becomes an even more impressive and surreal achievement. The HAT-ATs (Hat All Terrain Armored Transports) would bring an element of the Wild West to the snowy environment, further confusing the rebels, who’d likely be caught in their tracks, slack-jawed at the sheer ridiculousness of a mechanized posse of cowboys.
There you have it. 5 Star Wars scenes that would be even better with Dave Filoni’s hat. A tip of the hat to you, Mr. Filoni, for keeping western wear alive and well in the Star Wars universe.
