John Williams Signs On For “As Long As It Takes To Make Another Good One”
Award-winning film composer John Williams surprised Star Wars fans earlier today when he announced plans to continue working on the films indefinitely. The 85-year old living legend had just wrapped up writing the theme for Solo: A Star Wars Story, after which most people believed he would take time off. “Nah, I’m going to power through and tackle the next gig,” said Williams, who has never taken a day off since starting his career in 1825.
According to his long-time agent, Williams’ new deal will see him write music for Episode IX, Solo, Kenobi, Rian Johnson’s Subversica Trilogy, Fett, Rogue Two, Lando, and Episode X, not to mention a host of exclusive projects for Disney’s upcoming streaming service including original themes for 6 Knights of The Old Republic films, a Dash Rendar series and a planned Chewbacca/Maz Kanata sitcom.
While this may seem overly aggressive for a man his Golden Years, Williams believes he’s up to the task. “I’ve got great genes. My parents, God bless them, are pushing close to 400 years old. And hell, if anything happens to me, my force ghost knows where all the music sheets are.”
So, it seems the next hundred years will be filled with amazing Star Wars soundtracks. However, there is a small loophole in Williams’ contract that could see him exit sooner than expected. His agent explained that Williams is only obligated to work for Disney and Lucasfilm for “as long as it takes to make another good one.” Of course, if we’re using Episodes IV and V as the benchmarks for “good,” and considering Disney’s Star Wars cinematic output to date, Williams may be composing music for a long, long time to come.
Some conspiracy theorists claim Disney is purposely keeping their Star Wars films at just below “good” levels to ensure they reap the benefits of keeping Williams on board for the next hundred years if not longer. Whatever the case may be, fans are overjoyed at the prospects of having him finish out the (currently) 9-film saga and lend a hand in writing the main themes for the spinoff films. Hopefully, Williams is also mentoring a replacement… so he maybe take a day off sometime soon.
