Rumor: George Lucas in Talks to Direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

It’s been two weeks since Disney announced that James Gunn has been fired from his position of director of the upcoming sequel to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Since then, Kevin Feige has been scrambling to find a new director, looking in all places.

FSW affiliate “Faking Marvel” has an insider in the House of Mouse and was able to get the skinny on Feige’s shortlist for replacing Gunn. The list contained safe in-house choices such as Thor: Ragnarok‘s Taika Waititi, Doctor Strange‘s Scott Derrickson, and Captain America: The First Avenger‘s Joe Johnson, as well as former Ant-Man director Edgar Wright, Lego Movie‘s Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and last but not least the creator of Star Wars and director of Howard the Duck George Lucas.

Lucas enjoyed the Guardians films and began reading the comics after seeing the first film. He personally approached Bob Iger when the news about Gunn’s dismissal reached his ears. It’s unknown if Lucas will want to use Gunn’s script, which was reported to be completed and presented to Feige before Gunn was fired. Also no word on if Rick McCallum will be back as Lucas’s “Yes-Man” should he be chosen to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Our insider also uncovered that Lucas is pushing for Mark Hamill to voice Howard the Duck as a lead character and Warwick Davis to perform the motion capture for Rocket Raccoon. Hamill previously met with Gunn for a role in the film which likely was not Howard as the duck was previously voiced by Robot Chicken creator Seth Greene in the first Guardians film.

The main question is, should Lucas actually come out of retirement to take on such a high-profile film? Although, the fact he is diving into the source material makes it seem like his heart is really in this project and should be the front runner ahead of the MCU veterans.

Who do you think should take over Guardians Vol. 3? If not George Lucas, what should he do instead? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!
