Exclusive Info From Our Mandalorian Set Visit
Faking Star Wars was invited to visit the set of Disney+’s upcoming Star Wars live-action series, The Mandalorian last week! After the break we’ll disclose what we glimpsed first-hand. No story spoilers today though, since we signed an NDA. So we’re only sharing production information, which is very interesting nonetheless.
- Nick Nolte has not been on set. He is voicing a new alien character that is NOT an Ugnaught. It looks like a mix between a rat and a pig so it’s easy to be seen how it was mistaken for a Cloud City Ugnaught by other people who visited. Space rats were called Coheians or something close to that.
- We were told by our guide that Nolte prefers to record his lines in a janitor’s closet with an old comforter over his head to live as close to the rat life as possible.
- The body of Nolte’s alien character was played by the great Linda Hunt on set in a motion capture suit. Andy Serkis was there giving her tips. We actually shared banana smoothies with Hunt and Serkis.
- *Note: you will be able to try out this yet unnamed Star Wars drink at Galaxy’s End when it opens next year.
- A big A-list strong female was wanted for a role but she was unavailable so the role went to Emily Swallow. She was also very nice in person.
- They are using an even bigger version of the projection screen designed for Solo to film cockpit shots for entire sets and city extensions. This is a 3,000 inch Samsung UHD curved TV. They will go on sale at Costco the same day The Mandalorian premieres.
- It is all first-time technology and was really mind-blowing to look at on set. The environments looked extremely life-like when standing there. They are so real that governments would be able deny the climate change issues the projections showcased simply by looking at them.
- Gina Carano was cast for her action chops and will be doing all of her own stunts in a largely physical role.
- We didn’t get to meet Pedro Pascal as he wasn’t on set the day we visited but we did get to meet his stunt double Hablo. He was a very cool guy.
- There were not any old or classic characters at this point on set, so don’t expect Empire Strikes Back bounty hunters, Clone Wars-era mercenaries and Jedi, or Rebels heroes. We were told all the characters will be original to this series.
- However, artwork/graffiti that looks like it was created by Rebels‘ Sabine Wren is on several exterior brick walls of the set.
That’s all we are allowed to share. A big thanks to Disney+ and Lucasfilm for allowing us to visit the set. What do you think of this information? Let us know in the comments below or hitting us up on Twitter.
