Domhnall Gleeson Battles Fortnite Addiction
One of Episode IX’s worst kept secrets is finally out in the open — Domhnall Gleeson has come clean regarding his Fortnite addiction. The former professional gamer-turned-actor was said to spend upwards of 12 hours a day playing the popular videogame online. Gleeson’s digital habit resulted in very tense moments during production of the hotly anticipated Star Wars sequel.
According to our sources, fellow Episode IX actors often complained to director J.J. Abrams because Gleeson would regularly fall asleep on set after one of his Fortnite binge sessions. It seems things weren’t any better when he was awake.
“The vidiot would insist we call him General V-Bux instead of Hux. It got to the point that Chris [Terrio] had to rewrite scenes just to avoid mentioning the character’s name altogether,” said an irate member of the production.
Gleeson’s Fortnite addiction reportedly cost the production close to $4 million in multiple delays and rewrites. But that’s a small price to pay when compared to the financial toll the game has taken on the Irish actor.
“People talk about how mobile game developers try to attract whales… people who sink a ton of money into in-game purchases… well Epic landed the whale of whales with General V-Bux. The guy has spent over $12 million pounds on their virtual currency. Dom’s lucky J.J. staged the intervention when he did.”
We’re told the production faked a power outage one evening to force Gleeson to come out of his trailer. As soon as the panicked actor rushed outside, he was met by the director and the cast who proceeded to hold a candlelight intervention, complete with a real purple llama.
“They taught him a valuable lesson that night. Dom realized he had gone too far… and he was pushing his real-life friends away in pursuit of digital achievements. Miraculously, the cast and crew got him to delete his Fortnite account… and they celebrated by doing several of the silly victory dances together.”
Gleeson even retired his “D-pad” gamertag, which he’d built up over the last 15 years. Our sources claim the actor is well on his road to recovery, and will be taking time off from his hectic schedule. Looks like Epic has lost one of its biggest whales – and not a minute too soon.
