Mark Hamill To Receive Blue Lightsaber Checkmark On Twitter

He may no longer have his father’s lightsaber in Disney’s sequel trilogy, but Luke Skywalker will be getting the iconic weapon back in social media, thanks to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. As part of its $100m marketing campaign for Star Wars: Episode IX, Disney is set to break new ground on the platform with the first-ever branded blue checkmark.

For years now, branded emojis have been a go-to for movie studios, appearing after specific hashtags on Twitter. Until now, however, the blue checkmark has remained sacred – mainly a way for users to know if an account is verified.

We’re told Mark Hamill’s blue lightsaber checkmark will not only animate, but also include a link to a micro-site experience featuring exclusive content. Our spies believe the site is likely to explain the mystery of how Maz Kanata came to possess the lightsaber after the events of The Empire Strikes Back.

As exciting as that is, the Force requires balance – even when it comes to Twitter. Take this with a grain of salt, but our sources have also heard there will be a red branded checkmark for the super-secret new villain of Episode IX. We can only assume the actor is equally as active and popular on Twitter for the move to make any sense.

That said, might we see the living, breathing Luke Skywalker wielding the blue lightsaber in a duel versus a villain played by Oscar-nominated actor and Twitter-holic James Woods?

Such casting would certainly light up the Twittersphere like nothing before, given how vocal each performer is regarding their political views. If anything, the strategy would be a natural evolution of the ‘controversy marketing’ Disney is orchestrating for Captain Marvel.

While we can’t be certain it will be Woods, FSW is super stoked to see Mark Hamill get the first and only blue lightsaber checkmark in Twitter history. He deserves that and so much more.
