Star Wars OT Fans Protest Gender Bending Reboot
Sound the alarms! The first big Star Wars announcement since Celebration earlier this month is here! Paul Feig is returning to the world of gender-bending reboots with a remake of the original Star Wars trilogy set to begin shooting in Quebec this fall. The all-new, gender-swapped Star Wars movies are here.
Scarlet Johansson, who was already in talks for one of the more ethnic leads in the films, has signed on for the Paul Feig-directed reboot as a new take on Lando Calrissian. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is also negotiating with Daniel Kaluuya to portray Leia, and has begun talks with Bridget Jones alums Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant for unspecified roles.
Negotiations are ongoing, but the primary cast are expected to sign on as the gender-bending, Sith-punishing Rebels in the reboot, which is eyeing a fall shoot in Chateauguay Valley, Quebec. None of these actors have worked with Feig before, but they are all really big fans of hisBridesmaids.
Zellweger, who has been somewhat of a pariah since she got her new face, which is as perfectly lovely as her old face but nobody recognizes her, was quoted saying, “This is going to be my comeback movie. I thought it was the last Bridget Jones but it wasn’t. This is the one.”
“The all-female cast of Ghostbusters was critically panned ahead of its release but soared at the box office. Now, with Ghostbusters sequels ignoring that female movie and seeing the backlash they’re getting, it is the perfect time to remake these iconic films. Most of the characters will be new, but they’ll feel familiar to the characters you know and love and there will be a few tweaks to storylines to keep you on your toes. The Force isn’t just female. The Force is for everybody and that’s what we aim to show here.”
– Lucasfilm President, Kathleen Kennedy
The first film is set for release on July 22, 2021, Feig said on Twitter, as all three films are being filmed together. The subsequent films will release every July through 2024, splitting Return of the Jedi into a two-part finale a la Hunger Games: Mocking Jay and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
The Ghostbusters reboot had endured a long development process, but Star Wars has moved through the early development stages in record speed. Original director Ivan Reitman was on board to return to direct the new Ghostbusters, but pulled out of the project and following Reitman’s departure, Feig was approached to direct and reconceived the project as a reboot starring an all-female cast. Disney, impressed with this work, only considered him to direct the Star Wars reboot.
“We wouldn’t do it without [Feig],” said Kennedy. “He’s essential to our success.”
Die hard original trilogy fans have already begun to protest the new film, despite have no details about what it would entail.
