High School Principal Booed at Graduation Ceremony for Quoting The Last Jedi
EISENBERG, SOUTH DAKOTA — During the senior commencement speech at Northwest High School, Principal Lucas Kennedy took the stage to congratulate and pass on wisdom to the graduating class of 2019 on Saturday afternoon this past weekend. The speech Principal Kennedy delivered was as generic as all his speeches have been since he began his tenure back in 1999 until he subverted expectations by quoting The Last Jedi.
“When I found you, I saw raw, untamed power, and beyond that, something truly special.”
— Principal Kennedy to the class of 2019.
First, the principal recited a line by Supreme Leader Snoke and went on to quote Rey but swapping “I” for “You” and making it past tense in the line, “You needed someone to show me your place in all of this.”
Finally, Principal Kennedy quoted Rose Tico with the line, “That’s how we’re gonna win. Not fighting what we hate, saving what we love,” which felt out of place and somewhat tone-deaf. Upon delivery of Tico’s quote the principal was barraged with “boos” from the whole audience and a deluge of silly string from the senior class. Superintendent Larry McCallum lead the principal off stage before telling the senior class to toss their hats and he will, “see you in hell!” quoting Han Solo from The Empire Strikes Back.
“We were all pretty surprised Principal Kennedy quoted the sequel trilogy. He knows the entire student body are active on the prequel memes subreddit. All he had to was say, ‘Hello There’ or ‘A Surprise to be Sure’ and we would have loved it.”
–Senior class president Kathleen Marshall.
