November, the Fourth Will Be With You. Always.

Star Wars day is May 4th, right? Wrong! At least, it was never meant to be. “May the Fourth be With You” seems like a pretty obvious pun now, which The Walt Disney Corporation have successfully turned it into a massive multi-million-dollar annual celebration, but the first official Star Wars Day celebration didn’t take place until 2011. So how did master marketeer George Lucas miss what seems like such an obvious marketing opportunity. The answer is, he didn’t.

George Lucas had always intended there to be a Star Wars Day, he even reworked the original script to include a mention of the date. It just isn’t the date you think. We’ve been celebrating Star Wars Day on the wrong day. The key line from Star Wars: A New Hope isn’t “May the Force be with you” at all. The real line George Lucas hoped would spark a worldwide Star Wars celebration comes towards the end of the movie, when Luke Skywalker has just blown up the Death Star and the ghost of Obi-Wan delivers his now famous line:

“November, the fourth will be with you. Always.”

–Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jedi Master, Force ghost, prankster, pathological liar

“Wait!” we hear you scream. “I’ve seen that clip a million times. He doesn’t say that.” But listen again to the clip below. We have placed the original recording of Alex Guinness over the digitally enhanced visuals (note the green blast ring in the explosion).

Your brain can’t help hearing “Remember, the Force is with you. Always” because that is what you expect to hear but listen again.

Admiral Jinzæsckhkö

Little is known about the admiral other than that he once stowed away on an Imperial Star Destroyer and convinced the crew his tiny astronaut suit was prototype Stormtrooper armor.
