Gracie Abrams Uses Last Jedi Wrapping Paper For Dad’s Gifts
Hanukkah has been subverted — the 8-night Jewish festival of lights took on all-new meaning for director JJ Abrams this year. Rather than present Abrams with traditional gifts for each night of the holiday, his daughter Gracie ripped a page from Rian Johnson’s playbook instead. The 19-year-old trolled her father by wrapping each one of his gifts in The Last Jedi wrapping paper.
“Look what I’m wrapping my dad’s gifts in,” she wrote on her Instagram Stories earlier this week. The singer-songwriter proceeded to show off various (t)rolls of wrapping paper featuring the characters most reviled by her dad, including porgs and Thala-sirens.
The gag stems from the passive-aggressive war of words between JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson that has played out in various interviews. Johnson recently stated that a filmmaker should never cater to fans — a not-so-subtle shot at Abrams, who has been criticized for pandering to toxic fans critical of The Last Jedi. Meanwhile, Abrams has said building off what Johnson did in his subversive Star Wars entry has been a challenge. In essence, both filmmakers have been effectively trolling each other… which is what led to Gracie’s Hannukah stunt.
“I hope this puts an end to his constant whining about The Last Jedi. It got old two years ago, but dad still occasionally screams out ROUNDHEAD!!! for absolutely no reason. This should give him a good laugh, and hopefully allow him to move on already,” said Gracie via Instagram direct message.
The burgeoning chanteuse admitted to secretly being a fan of Johnson’s movie, particularly the Canto Bight casino scenes. BUT DO NOT TELL HER FATHER!
“I’m a musician, so I loved the cabaret vibes. But hell, I also prefer the psychotic fever dream that is the Cats movie over The Rise of Skywalker, so I’m by no means a Star Wars expert,” added Abrams.
As for the gift trolling, Gracie doesn’t take sole credit. Her mother laid out a general plan, which she then put into place with some help from her brother.
“Henry was essential to the joke, since he’s much more of a film geek than me. He actually gave us the idea to troll beyond just the wrapping paper. So we have multi-tiered trolling in every gift. Because each of the gifts inside is also something Rian Johnson-related. LOL!”
According to Gracie, her father has already opened seven of his eight Hannukah gifts from her. Thus far, JJ’s holiday haul includes the following:
- Vintage Leica M6 (the exact model preferred by Johnson)
- Looper on Blu-ray
- “You Must Remember This” t-shirt and mug based on Johnson’s girlfriend’s podcast
- A speed pass to the local adult bouncy house
- Signed and numbered commemorative knife set from Johnson’s film Knives Out
- Breaking Bad Blu-ray of only the three episodes written by Johnson
- Subscription to MasterClass to view Bob Iger’s lesson as well as Johnson’s forthcoming class on subversion
Try as we may, we could not get Gracie to reveal what her final Last Jedi-wrapped gift for her father is. We even reached out to Henry Abrams, who also refused to give up the surprise. One thing’s for sure though — whatever it is, it’s guaranteed to subvert JJ’s expectations.
