Kathleen Kennedy Thought The Last Jedi Was Episode IX

In the biggest Star Wars mix-up since Barack Obama used the term “Jedi mind meld,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has admitted that she believed The Last Jedi was the last entry in the Skywalker saga. The bombshell admission was made early this morning to a group of her closest staff members.

“Kat said the title really threw her for a loop, and she completely forgot that Rian’s movie was actually the second-to-last movie in the series,” said an anonymous source.

Our spy went on to say that Kennedy pinned the blame squarely on Rian Johnson for a “confusing” title. The embattled executive feels “The Middle Jedi” or “Second-To-Last Jedi” would have been much clearer to her and the Lucasfilm Story Group.

Critics disagree.

“Kathleen’s confusion helps explain how the script was greenlit in the first place. The movie kills Luke Skywalker, then offs the villain built up in Episode VII… in essence, the film leaves nowhere for the story to go. Hell, we even get an epilogue with broom boy that feels like the last shot of the saga. It’s a better ending than the one JJ Abrams cobbled together in the actual last Skywalker film,” said Rise of Skywalker co-writer Chris Terrio.

Because of the mix-up, Disney CEO Bob Iger has mandated that Star Wars move away from the trilogy structure. According to our source, Lucasfilm will be focusing on standalone films with a clear beginning, middle, and end.

When asked whether a return to numbering the films in marketing materials might have helped prevent the confusion, Kennedy immediately fired the staffer who posed the question. “She said Roman numerals are stupid, and would only confuse her more,” said our source.

We reached out to Abrams and Johnson for comment, but only the former replied with a picture of Kelly Marie Tran in a red dress. We’re still not sure what it means.
