Kathleen Kennedy Is Auctioning Off An NFT Of Her Firing You

Leaning into her reputation as a demanding boss, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy is offering straight white men the opportunity to be fired via limited-edition NFT (non-fungible token). In an industry-first, Kennedy has partnered with Dapper Labs, the blockchain company behind the NBA’s Top Shot collectibles marketplace, to produce a one-of-a-kind, first-person layoff video.

For those unaware, NFTs are digital assets that can represent virtually anything—from art and  music to videos and tweets. While an NFT may be copied, only a limited number of owners may possess the definitive digital version that can be authenticated with a unique blockchain token. The content creator sets the number of owners for the definitive version, and in Kennedy’s case, there will only be one genuine POV-style layoff video NFT.

“Throughout this pandemic, I’ve been using Zoom for group layoffs but it’s just not the same as a one-on-one dressing down. So I’m giving one lucky member of the patriarchy the chance to experience what it’s like to get fired by yours truly,” said Kennedy via Twitter Spaces.

We’re told the video features Kennedy in her trademark black blazer and shirt combo with “The Force is Female” emblazoned across the tee. Apparently, she compliments you for being perfect for the project, then unloads a barrage of attacks that detail your shortcomings based on political leaning, faith, marital status, mansplaining, preferred pronouns and love of pre-Disney Star Wars. The video is said to culminate with an appearance by the entire Lucasfilm Story Group who shake their heads and wag their fingers at you while Kennedy terminates you.

“I thought about offering my services on Cameo, but that felt so old fashioned. I wanted this to be special and future-forward and NFTs just made sense, because so many tech bros are obsessed with it. As George would always say…if you want to catch gooberfish. fish where the gooberfish are biting,” added Kennedy.

Dapper Labs will be auctioning off Kennedy’s one-of-a-kind NFT in June. Proceeds from the sale will help support Los Angeles-based organization Women in Film.
