Wookieepedia To Update All 166,565 Entries With Preferred Pronouns
Since 2005, Wookieepedia has been the go-to source for Star Wars fans seeking information on the characters, planets or items that inhabit the galaxy far, far away. But over the years, the online encyclopedia, which encompasses both Canon and Legends materials, has faced mounting criticism for not including details that better reflect the social and political climate of the modern era.
“Star Wars does not exist in a vacuum. We cannot hide from the realities that we’re living in. Wookieepedia needs to get with the times and include more than just a Wookie-centric view of the galaxy,” said Star Wars: High Republic writer Justina Ireland, who’s recently been appointed Lucasfilm’s Head Of Fictional Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
Ireland recently spearheaded a 3-day virtual summit, featuring LBGTQIA leaders and the Lucasfilm Story Group, to outline ways in which Wookieepedia can be restructured to better reflect modern identity politics. The key takeaway from the event was that the community-driven website needs to prioritize gender and sexuality or risk being canceled.
Bowing to the pressures from Ireland and over twenty people on Twitter, Wookieepedia founders Chad “Whiteboy” Barbry and Steven “Riffsyphon” Greenwood have agreed to overhaul the site.
Effective immediately, the community will begin updating all 166,565 entries with the preferred pronouns and sexual preferences for every character, vessel, planet and weapon featured in any Star Wars media from 1977 to now.
“As an ally to fictional characters of all colors, genders and sexualities, I’m proud to announce the start of Project Woke-ipedia, a year-long process of reflection and rewriting,” said “Whiteboy” Barbry who said he would be dropping his nickname in favor of “White He/Himboy.”
Blue checkmarks across social media are already celebrating Wookieepedia’s effort.
“I love that I will no longer have to tweet Keo Venzee’s pronouns myself. This is a victory for fans everywhere. Now there will be no excuse for deadnaming a character or referring to them as bisexual they/them where they’re actually pansexual boop/beep/bop,” said Star Wars Squadrons writer Mitch Dyer.
