Natalie Portman Says Making “For The Better” Memes Is A Form Of Bullying
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA—The face that launched a million memes is happy about it, right? She’s happy about it, right? Apparently, no. Thor: Love and Thunder star Natalie Portman is not happy with the Star Wars meme that has taken over the Internet.
“I love a good meme, don’t get me wrong. But most of the latest ones with me and Hayden having a picnic are trash. And they’re only getting worse as older people try their hardest to be hip and with it. Honestly, it’s a form of bullying at this point. Like, okay a few of them were great in the beginning, but it’s gotten out of hand, and I’m really concerned for Hayden,” said Portman via TikTok this morning.
The actress-turned-supermom has been the focus of 2,645,854 prequel memes, so she’s no stranger to Millennial and Gen Z humor, but she believes once a meme template hits a certain threshold, the content becomes less about creativity and more about harassment.
“It’s just a massive pile-on of annoying notifications. Because the unfunniest people who come to the party super late are inevitably the ones who tag us in a dozen lame memes. Which chases us off social media. Mental health takes a hit, too. We start to think we exist only for these macro templates. And it starts to bleed into reality. I’ve found myself reliving some of the ‘Red Flag’ memes. I even created a few new ones and regrettably texted them to Hayden. I am becoming the thing I hate. Because it’s like my toddler’s therapist says: Meme’d people meme others,” added Portman.
As our chat came to a close, the actress urged us to help get the word out and help retire the popular meme as soon as possible.
“There must be a sequel meme they can obsess over instead, right? Right?”
