Kelly Marie Tran Says Anyone Can Wear A Rose Tico Costume
For Star Wars fans wondering if a Rose Tico costume will upset someone given today’s outrage culture, you’ve got the green light — straight from the Resistance mechanic herself! Kelly Marie Tran, the Asian American actress who portrayed Rose Tico in The Last Jedi, thinks it’s absolutely fine for anyone to dress up as the character for Halloween.
“You don’t need to be Vietnamese or from space or identify as a woman to become Rose. That’s ridiculous. As long as you believe in her message. That hope and love can help create a better world for everyone… then you’re already Rose Tico on the inside. Why not dress like her on the outside,” said Tran early Tuesday morning.
Tran said one of her favorite memories from this year’s San-Diego Comic involved a “Rally for Rose” organized by her fans. The ethnically diverse group dressed as Rose Tico, and posed for pictures to send a clear message to haters: WE ARE ROSE TICO, AND WE’RE NOT GOING ANYWHERE.
“Think of Halloween as another Rose Rally… even if you’re the only Rose in your neighborhood, there are lots of us out there, in our space bangs and jumpsuits, who’ve got your back,” added Tran.
Hopefully, this ends any cries of cultural appropriation regarding Rose Tico costumes. Because we were going to have a really hard time returning ours after wearing it to change the oil on the ol’ Minnie Winnie. Field tests are everything!
