Gladiator 2 To Feature Epic Podracing Sequence
WAKANDA — “Are you not entertained… by podracing,” said director Ridley Scott from the set of his first ever TV series, Raised By Wolves. The 80-year old filmmaker has announced plans to produce a sequel to Gladiator, his Oscar-winning swords-and-sandals epic that catapulted Russell Crowe into superstardom. Without Crowe’s Maximus around to battle Roman forces though, Scott is turning to technology to help wow modern-day audiences.
“I’m de-aging Russell for a great flashback sequence. As for Lucius, he’s the new gladiator but Shia [LaBeouf] is only providing the voice because Lucius is entirely digital,” said the octogenarian filmmaker.
Gladiator 2 is said to focus on Maximus’ son as he battles nefarious forces in Rome. Lucius will see visions of his father throughout his journey that help him overcome the odds. One sequence in particular has Scott very excited: a podrace similar to the one featured in The Phantom Menace, involving retro-futuristic technology developed by the new Cesar, pits Lucius against the fastest, most furious racers throughout the Roman empire.
“It’s so meta, brother. When you think about how Georgie [Lucas] was paying homage to Ben-Hur’s chariot scene, and now we’re paying homage to Anakin and Sebulba’s big race. The homage has come full circle. Freakin’ wizard indeed.”
Scott is no stranger to reviving his dormant film franchises. Within the last 10 years, he’s directed a Blade Runner sequel along with two Alien sequels. But now Scott is turning to properties outside of sci-fi, including Gladiator 2 and a rumored Thelma & Louise 2.
