Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Inspired Rey’s Look In Episode IX
She tweets. She dances. She infuriates conservatives. And now, the darling of the Democratic Party, U.S. Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez is doing something even more meaningful. According to costume designer Michael Kaplan, AOC’s iconic swearing in outfit has inspired Rey’s look in Star Wars: Episode IX.
“Alexandria’s nod to suffragettes really struck a chord with Kathy [Kennedy]. Because in a way, Rey is fighting for the right to be her own Jedi — both in look, fighting style and motivation. Rey breaks the mold. And at a macro level, the entire sequel trilogy is about shifting people’s perceptions. Yes, Star Wars can be female led and still be a genuine Star Wars experience.”
A recently leaked photo revealed a regal-looking Rey in all-white. However, there are a still a few surprises to come, according to Kaplan.
“No homage to AOC’s look would be complete without the red lipstick and large hoop earrings. Let’s just say Kylo is going to be tested like never before. I’ll leave it at that.”
Exciting stuff. Just when you think Ocasio-Cortez’s star can’t rise any higher, she goes and outdoes herself. We can’t wait to see Rey’s complete look when Episode IX lands in theaters in December of 2019.
