John Boyega Predicts Episode IX Will Make Him THE Black Guy In Star Wars
“I’m still living in Billy and Sam’s shadows, but I think Episode IX may change that,” said John Boyega in a recent DM exchange with @FakingStarWars on Instagram. Since being cast as Finn in The Force Awakens, Boyega has wanted to become more than just the black guy in the sequel trilogy; he’s wanted to become THE black guy — the male person of color fans immediately think of when people ask about black guys in Star Wars.
“Bruh, I’m super competitive, and honestly I don’t think Lando has anything over Finn. Okay, okay, maybe Billy Dee wins in the style department, but Finn is a better friend… and in this #MeToo era, Lando is pretty problematic, wouldn’t you say? No black guy in Star Wars is a safer friend to men, women and droids. And remember, I also have lightsaber skills!”
FSW was quick to point out that Samuel L. Jackson’s Jedi Master Mace Windu is far more skilled with a lightsaber. To which Boyega countered.
“Tru dat, but he’s dead and Finn’s not, right? Really makes you think. To be THE black man, you’ve gotta have survival skills, and Finn has them to spare. Hell, even Captain Panaka got nothing on me. And once you see what I do in Episode IX, you’ll come around to my way of thinking. Finn’s THE black guy in Star Wars. Screencap this.”
I suppose we’ll find out when Episode IX his theaters in December of 2019.
