Joss Whedon To Be Showrunner For Female-Centric Star Wars Series
Execs at Freeform say they have secured the rights to produce a female-centric Star Wars series with Firefly andBuffy the Vampire creator Joss Whedon serving as showrunner. Inside sources say the show will play as a bit of a cross between Sex and the City and Star Wars but with a more obvious comedic edge.
“We’re so excited to have Joss for this. He’s so good at writing empowered female characters,” said a studio exec who prefers to remain anonymous. “In the #metoo era, it’s really hard to find a way to empower women, while still keeping a white male at the helm. Joss is the perfect mix for that.”
Sarah Silverman is confirmed to star as the show’s main protagonist, Penula Vulvaris, a mid-level sales exec for the largest robotics firm in the galaxy. Because of her job, Penula is in a unique position to meet potential mates from all sides of the Force. Sith, Jedi, Stormtroopers and Rebels all have their chance to be Penula’s life-mate.
“I think it’s a great way to see the everyday life parts you never see in the Star Wars universe,” said Sarah Silverman. “Plus, in the first episode there’s this hilarious scene with a Wookiee and some pool toys that look like, well, let’s just say we discover their actual intended use.”
Comedic performers Mindy Kaling and Leslie Jones are attached to the project as well, although to what extent remains to be seen. Master of None’s Aziz Ansari is slated to have a recurring role as a Pa’lowick love interest. In addition, Nicholas Brendan, of Buffy and Survival Island fame, is also attached to the show as Penula’s Rodian gay best friend.
The pilot for the as-yet-unnamed show with a working title of “Sex and the Sith” is in final production and is set to be released on Freeform in early 2020.
