Babu Frik Merchandise Pulled Over Safety Concerns
In the latest edition of Why We Can’t Have Nice Things, Lucasfilm has pulled all Babu Frik merchandise from store shelves after bloggers took hyperbole to dangerous new levels.
The bizarre drama began on Triple Force Friday, when an image of the tiny droidsmith from the planet Kajimi was revealed on Twitter. Online journalists, who specialize in ridiculous clickbait, greeted the creature with the standard amount of fabricated cringe-worthy enthusiasm reserved for the Cute New Thing™ from Star Wars.
However, rather than simply fawn over Babu and issue vows to “protect him” because “we don’t deserve him,” several bloggers and blue checkmark Twitter personalities upped the ante, stating that they would be willing to die for the master droid programmer.
Ultimately, the writers and influencers may have been using millennial humor, but the humor was lost on Lucasfilm… and unfortunately for Babu Frik fans, all of the planned toys, T-shirts, bed sheets, and rompers featuring the cat-like alien have all been cancelled as a result.
“We treat all threats, especially those that put fans at risk, as a serious concern. Therefore, we’ll be halting the sale of any Babu Frik merchandise until such time that he no longer drives fans to harm themselves or anyone else for that matter,” said a Lucasfilm spokesperson.
The concern is not relegated to his cuteness, either. Apparently, Lucasfilm believes Babu Frik’s diminutive size represents the ultimate choking hazard for children and adults with small throats. Insiders tell us it’s a design flaw overlooked by toy maker Hasbro — a mistake made even worse when you consider how much smaller the Frik’in accessories need to be.
Farewell, Babu. We hardly knew ya! Perhaps we didn’t deserve you after all.
