Kathleen Kennedy Trolls Haters In Her Acting Debut
Mega-producer Kathleen Kennedy has reached yet another milestone in her ever-expanding legacy. Believe it or not, the president of Lucasfilm can now add “leading lady” to her accomplishments as she takes center stage in the direct-to-streaming thriller Get Gone.
For the last 18 months, Kennedy has juggled her duties at Lucasfilm with rehearsing, shooting, and reshooting scenes for the suspenseful thriller. In the film, Kennedy plays Mama, the matriarch of a family of squatters that has lived illegally on Government land for over 30 years. Her clan becomes entangled in a battle between a drilling company, the feds, and an internet fake video team who specializes in de-bunking hoaxes.
“Get Gone is very personal to me. Everything from the title to the storyline is a big middle finger to every hater I’ve ever had. The land Mama inhabits is a metaphor for Star Wars… which everyone wants a piece of. The Hoax Busters video crew represents every click baiter out there… the folks who’ve generally made my life a living hell for the last five years. They finally get their comeuppance — and by my hand! Obviously it’s just a movie, but f%*$ was it cathartic,” said Kennedy via Skype.
Kennedy’s fans will be first to point out that Get Gone is technically not her acting debut. Over 30 years ago, the future Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award winner portrayed one of the“Anything Goes” dancers for director Steven Spielberg in Indiana Jones: The Temple of Doom.
“It’s been ages since Temple [Of Doom], but this girl’s still got it! I forgot how great it feels to be on the other side of the camera… and now it’s even better because they can’t fire me or Frank [Marshall] will crush them like a bug!”
Get Gone is such a passion project for Kennedy, she chose to forgo having Lucasfilm produce it. According to her, having a different studio produce the film allowed it to be much edgier than her typical projects.
“I was able to be raw and untamed! If you think the Force is a strong female, wait until you see me as Mama! Bad-ass doesn’t begin to describe it!”
Naturally we asked Kennedy whether she was laying the groundwork for a post-Lucasfilm future as an actor? Kennedy remained coy about the possibilities, however, she did remind us that her contract is up in 2021.
