Exclusive: ‘Star Wars: Underworld’ Anime Mini-Series Coming in April to Disney+

Call me Captain Ahab because I just landed the white whale. Recently my longtime friend and cohort, George Lucas, stopped by the ol’ condo and we got to chatting about the past, present, and future of space opera. As it turns out he was recently back at his old stomping grounds of Lucasfilm HQ and was shown a new project featuring everyone’s favorite Gungan, a Gonk droid, and… Spider-Man?

Before we get to the new stuff, George did whet my pallet about what this series would be about and apologized for not going through with this story line back in the day during production of the prequels.

“I’m sorry for not fulfilling my original plan with the prequels; you know, dropping the whole ‘Jar Jar is evil’ thing. Ahmed [Best] wasn’t too happy about that either. I want to blame the fans of that time period; insatiable jackals. I dropped cinema gold into their laps and they repay me by revolting like some third world dissidents. They forsook me, so forsook them! I can admit that now because I’m filthy rich and need no one.”

— George Lucas

For those of you shaking your heads, George did set “Darth Jar Jar” up in the Phantom Menace, but the fans hated the idea of Jar Jar doing anything ever again. Binks used Force jumps, mind tricks, etc. it’s all right there on the screen for anyone with working eyes to see. And don’t get me started on the Clone Wars episodes that spelled it out in no uncertain terms.

But anyway, here’s the reason you clicked this article. George recently consulted on Star Wars: Underworld a new buddy cop space opera anime mini-series created by Genndy Tartakovsky and loosely based on scripts written by Lucas over a decade ago. Of course Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau will be on board with producer credits. It will be releasing on Disney+ along side a slew of classic Star Wars TV shows on April 2nd with a 5 episode run, ending just before Bad Batch will premier on the platform. Depending on how well the mini-series is received, more episodes could be produced.

“It’s a bizarre dive into the criminal underworld of Coruscant with Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best) and a no-nonsense Gonk droid as renegade cops toeing the line between law and disorder. Tom Holland is voicing a deathstick kingpin who informs on other criminals to continue monopolizing Coruscant’s gateway drug scene. Other characters I created will be showing up also, but that’s all I can say at the moment since they did force me to sign an NDA.”

I tried to get George to tell me who is voicing the Gonk droid but he said he personally wanted to keep that one a secret. He did however tell me that this will show Jar Jar go from righteous Gungan warrior, to senator, to Imperial space detective, and finally his rise to power in the criminal underworld; all spiraling from Padme’s death in Revenge of the Sith leading to his discovery it was ‘Little Ani’ who killed her.
