Scrabble Removes 25 Derogatory Star Wars Words
By request of Lucasfilm, the owners of Scrabble have banned “offensive” Star Wars words from all versions of the game. As of today, 25 derogatory terms have been removed from the official list of playable words by Hasbro, the board game’s North American owner. The toy company’s swift action has caused an uproar among Star Wars fans and Scrabble players around the world, who have accused Mattel of virtue signaling and kowtowing to Lucasfilm’s ridiculous demands.
Neither Hasbro or Lucasfilm have published the list of words but FSW spies managed to obtain the document via other means. Per the interoffice memo, the following Star Wars terms have been banned:
- Bombad
- Choobies
- Crik
- Dank farrik
- Dosh
- E chu ta
- Esehigi
- Fierfek
- Goldenrod
- Kriffing
- Kung
- Laserbrain
- Moof-milker
- Mudscuffer
- Nerfherder
- Peedunky
- Pfassk
- Poodoo
- Scaredy-sark
- Skug
- Sleemo
- Stifftroopers
- Stormbloopers
- Tailhead
- Wastoid
It appears every word is either an intergalactic expletive or a derogatory slur used against various alien races, stormtroopers or droids. Hasbro’s gesture, however, is going a step too far for political correctness, according to Scrabble grandmaster Geraldine Schitt-Johnson.
Ms. Schitt-Johnson told FSW: “Hasbro is not responding to any demands or conflicts from within the Scrabble world, which is international, inclusive and friendly. Therefore its actions are seen by many as virtue signalling, making a token gesture of ‘wokism’ to stay on Disney’s good side.”
Hasbro’s decision impacts competition-level Scrabble, which is played by thousands of people at tournaments held throughout North America. The move has already caused three prominent members of the Star Wars Scrabble Players Rebel Alliance to resign in protest.
“Words listed in Star Wars canon and Scrabble dictionaries are not slurs,” said Jeffrey Ortiz, one of the Alliance members who left his post upon hearing the news. “They only become slurs when used with a derogatory purpose or intent, or used with a particular tone and in a particular context.”
Hasbro told FSW that its intervention, which is the first time it has sought to remove Star Wars words, was a political decision made in response to the Gatekeeping Star Wars protests of 2021 on Twitter.
Chris Bixby, Hasbro’s Head of Games, said: “We looked at the online bullying prevalent in the Star Wars fandom, and decided this was the right thing to do. We stand with our partners at Lucasfilm against hate speech in all of its forms.”
No word on whether Star Wars editions of Trivial Pursuit and Monopoly will follow suit.
