Zack Snyder Collaborating with George Lucas on Netflix’s ‘Rebel Moon’
Zack Snyder, director of Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Army of the Dead is teaming up with legendary filmmaker George Lucas for his upcoming epic sci-fi fantasy film for Netflix, Rebel Moon.
Snyder actually pitched his original idea to Lucas way back in 2009 but the Star Wars creator felt it was a little too mature for the audience of his films but liked it enough to silently collaborate on the project. Then, after the Lucasfilm sale to Disney in 2012, Lucas suggested to Snyder that he go ahead and pitch the idea to them after they found a happy middle ground for this more mature take on the Galaxy Far, Far Away. Unfortunately, Lucas’ appointed president of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, didn’t go for it.
It was back to the drawing board for Snyder and Lucas when the elder filmmaker finally agreed to add in the mature themes since now it wouldn’t be a Star Wars film but rather an original story with both Snyder’s and Lucas’s fingerprints all over it; Lucas even gave Snyder unused Ralph McQuarrie concept art that never left his basement when the Disney sale of Lucasfilm happened. Following the success of Army of the Dead, Netflix asked Snyder if he had any other movie ideas to pitch to them and of course he brought George into the pitch meeting with him and the duo secured a deal to set up Rebel Moon to be the streaming service’s next flagship IP.
“George [Lucas] and I have spent the last decade building out this universe. Every corner has to be painted in,” Snyder shared with the Hollywood Reporter. “He gave me these beautiful Ralph McQuarrie designs which have inspired me to be constantly drawing and really cultivating the fertile ground of this new world and to make it fully realized. It’s pretty far along now and we are hoping to start shooting in early 2022.”
The story is set in motion when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate people dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.
