Exclusive! Disney to Re-Release Entire Star Wars Saga on VHS
While everyone else is reporting the same thing, a Digital HD release of the entire Star Wars saga, we have a scoop no one else is reporting! Disney is set to release the entire saga on old-school VHS! More info after the jump!
With the recent fad of retro chic goodness achieving mainstream success, Disney will be releasing their first physical copies of the Star Wars saga on VHS, complete with “vintage” puffy white vinyl cases. It’s not known whether it will be the original non-special edition versions of the films or the most recent updated versions, filled with George Lucas CGI glory. What we do know, however, is that the re-release will preserve all original scan lines and crackles, making it pretty clear that it will be the pre-special editions.
As for the PT films, we here at Faking Star Wars imagine they will be “dumbed down” and look retro as well, keeping in line with that “a long time ago” tagline from the movies.
The collection will include all six Star Wars films, a double triptych if you will, and also several bonus tapes set to include interviews and special features such as deleted scenes, blooper reels, etc.
While a release date is still being ironed out, it is rumored to be November 2015, just in time for all the Black Friday/Cyber Monday shoppers. The price point however is looking to be well over $150 due to Disney refurbishing their old technology to record to tapes again.
Along with Star Wars, Disney is also releasing animated hit, Frozen on VHS. If these are successful in sales, Disney will be moving forward with releasing them on Betamax as well. Frozen is due to release this summer.
