Finn Said, “Hell No!” in His TV Spot and it’s Okay
Over the recent weeks we have been given several new TV spots for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, one of which featured John Boyega’s Finn. In that particular spot, fans noticed something controversial: Finn says, “Hell no!” to Han. Many concerned geeks felt this was out of place in the Star Wars universe as it is modern slang, but we’re here to tell you why it was “A-okay” after the jump.
FSW was given the distinct pleasure to sit down with cultural linguist Morgan Tracy, who is a huge fan of our favorite sci-fi franchise (besides Battlestar Galactica). She told us why it’s fine that Finn, played by an actor of African descent, said the phrase “Hell no!” which is typically heard in “urban” settings.
“Finn is portrayed by an “urban” actor,” Morgan explained. “We have gays in Star Wars, why can’t we have “modern urban” slang in Star Wars? It’s meant to be a reflection of our current culture and if you have not noticed, black folk, like myself, tend to use that phrase just as much as white rural folks. This is totally fine and the people who are against saying, “Hell no!” are obviously racist. Just let the man say his line, enjoy the fact we are seeing another Star Wars film and shut the hell up!”
We think this is a great explanation of why it was okay that Finn said this phrase. If you recall, Han did say to a Rebel trooper in The Empire Strikes Back, “I’ll see you in Hell!” Obviously Hell is a concept in the Star Wars universe as well and this just provides more chances for speculation!
