Matthew McConaughey: It’s Time to Embrace Jar Jar Binks
Add Matthew McConaughey to the list of celebrities speaking out in defense of the widely derided Star Wars prequel films. The famous Texan says it’s time for Hollywood to bury the hatchet and embrace Episodes 1, 2 and 3 – yes, even the most vilified character from those films: gungan Jar Jar Binks.
“Well, they don’t have a choice now,” McConaughey told FSW in an exclusive interview. “He’s going to appear in The Last Jedi.” The star of the upcoming Dark Tower acknowledged that George Lucas’ prequels were “divisive” but urged his fellow actors to coalesce around Jar Jar Binks.
“At the same time, it’s time for us to embrace and shake hands with this fact and be constructive with him when he appears in the new movies throughout the next 8 years.”
The Oscar winner is not the only celebrity to come out as a prequel apologist. Recently, Mark Hamill – arguably the face of the Star Wars franchise — defended the films and expressed anger over how Jake Lloyd, who played 10-year old Anakin in The Phantom Menace, has been treated by fans on the internet over the years.
Hamill’s sentiments are shared by other members of Hollywood royalty as well.
“Let’s hope Jake gets better. I give him a shot,” American Crime star Felicity Huffman told FSW before a screening of Episode 1 at her home. “The prequels are actually my favorite Star Wars films.”
Her feelings were echoed by Black-ish star Anthony Anderson. “I hope Jar Jar proves everyone wrong in The Last Jedi. That’s what I’m hoping for,” he said. “That means Star Wars fandom will be better off so I want him to succeed.”
Will Hollywood’s support of the prequels be enough to turn the tides among a generation raised on Red Letter Media’s mockery of the films? We’re not sure, but our fingers are certainly crossed. Plus, we have a garage full of 12-inch Jar Jars ready to unload once the market says they’re worth more than negative 200 dollars.
