Dr. Evazan: Rogue One Cameo Was A Mistake
DUBLIN, IRELAND — Dr. Evazan is hanging up the psychopathic scrubs, for good this time. Michael Smiley, the actor who portrayed Evazan in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story believes he misdiagnosed the opportunity and regrets ever appearing in the film.
“Fan service should make fans happy… and my scene pissed off most people, myself included. Don’t get me wrong. The paycheck was sweet… but no amount of money is worth the shame and regret I feel.”
Smiley’s criticism is nothing new. Upon release, Rogue One was panned by several critics for being 133 minutes of callbacks that had no reason to exist beyond “the continued soulless milking of the Star Wars brand by Disney.” However, this is the first time one of the most egregious callbacks in the film is called out by a performer in the very scene.
As for Evazan’s partner in crime, Ponda Baba or Walrus Man, who also appears in the scene, Smiley had this to say:
“Ponda was mostly CG but I became friends with the guy in charge of animating my best mate… and he also regrets it. Guy left the industry because of it.”
Smiley tells FSW he is considering a GoFundMe to help raise money to buy back the rights to his face and have Disney digitally erase him from Rogue One.
“I understand they own the rights to Dr. Evazan. I just don’t want my face used in the scene. They can slap makeup on some other patsy and stick him in there. I just want my dignity back.”
We reached out to Smiley’s good friend and Star Wars cameo veteran Simon Pegg for his perspective on the matter, but he was away on holiday, which may or may not be code for “cameo’ing” in Episode VIII.
