George Lucas Loved Black Panther, Would Kill To Direct Killmonger Spinoff
The creator of Star Wars is down with the King! George Lucas and his lovely wife Mellody Hobson were among the beautiful people at the star-studded Hollywood premiere of Marvel Studio’s Black Panther. FSW managed to speak to the legendary filmmaker at the after party for the blockbuster film. Not only did Lucas enjoy the film immensely, he actually prefers it to the current batch of Disney Star Wars films.
“There’s a difference between simply throwing people of color in a film to tick some box… versus creating genuine likable heroes for young people to believe in. T’Challa and Lando before him are great characters first and foremost. The fact that they physically look like the millions of black children who aspire to be them is an added bonus.”
Lucas was impressed at Black Panther’s scale and its ability to speak to larger cultural issues. “They managed to make Wakanda feel so alive… I really loved the spirituality of it all too. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen something that was as fun and hopeful as this.”
The film seems to have knocked the 73-year old film legend out of retirement, as he’s now keen on directing a Killmonger spinoff. “Michael B. Jordan impressed the heck out of me. And you know I love a good villain, and Killmonger is right up there next to Vader. I’d love to make him bigger than Thanos for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
FSW is more than a little excited by the possibilities. If Uncle George wants to make a superhero film, we’ll be first in line – even if it’s a sequel to Howard The Duck. We have so shame.
