Feminists Blast Bald Faced Wookiee Costumes
Solo: A Star Wars Story can’t seem to shake controversy. The film’s latest PR fiasco involves newly released Wookiee costumes that reinforce gender stereotypes, according to feminists. While the male variety of the hairy alien costume includes a mask with a full face of fur, the female version is completely bald faced. Instead of a mask it includes a fur lined hood, not at all representative of actual Wookiee woman biology.
“I’m literally shaking. Such a double standard. Disney is setting us back at least 190 years back to when Chewbacca was born,” said Xev Bernstein, a leading women’s rights activist.
Bernstein and tens of other feminists on Twitter argue women have every right to a complete Wookiee look, consisting of a furry face, wet nose and canine teeth. The vocal group contends Disney opted for hoodies because the company believes Star Wars-loving women are too vain to cover their faces. The hairy situation has also drawn the ire of the posterchild for Wookiee women everywhere, Chewbacca mom.
“It’s definitely a double standard. Female Wookiees are just as hairy and beautiful in the face as Chewbacca or any other male Wookiee. It’s a sad day when we’re forced to show our real faces, while pretending to be female Wookiees. No one wants to see this hairless mug. It breaks the illusion… and my hearrrrrrrrrrrt,” said Candace Payne through a slightly malfunctioning Wookiee voice changer mask soaked in tears.
Disney has yet to reply to the uproar, however, many people have suggested the group should buy the male version of the costume if they really want a face full of fur. “We shouldn’t have to stoop so low for a workaround. Disney needs to fix this now!”
