James Gunn Joins The Cast Of Star Wars 9
Director James Gunn is trading his beleaguered position behind the camera for one in front of it. FSW has just caught wind that Gunn will appear as a cabaret entertainer in a cantina set in the rough underbelly of the Star Wars universe. Apparently, the cameo will be very meta as Gunn launches into a comedy set that subverts comedy for a mix of dramedy heavy on pathos as he details his own undoing at the hands of social media.
The bit of stunt casting is said to be the brainchild of Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. The progressive executive, no stranger to controversy herself, went to bat for Gunn despite objection from Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios. In the end, Disney CEO Bob Iger sided with Kennedy and will allow Gunn to appear in Star Wars 9.
From Iger’s point of view, the brave move will appease vocal fans who felt Gunn’s instant dismissal from Guardians of the Galaxy 3 over 10-year old tweets was unfair. It’s unclear whether Gunn will appear as an alien at this point, but given how personal his standup act will be, we believe he will cameo as his usual humanoid self, perhaps augmented by a blue or purple hair dye job.
