Domhnall Gleeson Explains Hux’s Rivalry with Kylo Ren
After his interview with the LA Times, Domhnall Gleeson was kind enough to sit down with FakingStarWars at our Anaheim office to answer a few questions over a Chipotle lunch. After the break we share exclusive details regarding General Hux, including what’s in store for him in Episode VIII, and how his relationship with the other new villains of the Star Wars universe will play out.
“Kylo is basically Hux’s evil step-brother,” Gleeson explained after cleaning guacamole off of his face. “We’re both vying for daddy’s attention. Daddy is Snoke obviously.”
Gleeson went on to share that he had some design input on Hux’s wardrobe. “I just told them, ‘I want to be a space version of Hitler,’ and they went with it. Hell, the whole speech scene where I was in front of that big red banner was my idea. I said we should make the First Order look like f**king Nazis, and once again they rolled with it.”
We asked Gleeson if he had read any of the Expanded Universe, now labeled “Legends,” novels to get inspiration or just Mein Kampf. “Funny story about that actually,” Gleeson shared. “I’ve never read Mein Kampf but I did read a lot of Star Wars books to get familiar with the universe. The character Thrawn stood out to me and that’s what I based my performance on. Thrawn was essentially Hitler minus the teeny mustache and blatant racism.” Gleeson chuckled and continued, “The First Order doesn’t hate a certain sect of people or religious group. They hate bloody everyone, hence why Hux gave the order to blow up the Republic’s planetary system.”
After downing our entire collection of glass bottled Mr. Pibb, and a whole bag of chips all by himself, Gleeson went on to elaborate a bit about what Hux will be doing in Episode VIII. “Hux will still have a major role in [Episode] VIII but I can’t explain exactly what he will be doing without spoiling anything.”
One of our contributors was in the office that day, JJ’s Cat, and he asked Gleeson if Rian Johnson was as “spoiler-box-y” as JJ Abrams. “Well… yes and no. I have yet to film any scenes yet but from our initial read-through of the script we had to sign an NDA, but not your typical NDA. We had to sign it in blood.” JJ’s Cat, and the entire group that was sitting with Gleeson looked at him oddly. “I know right?! F**king blood! I thought the man was mad but he explained later and it will be explained in the film as well. It was… symbolic if you will.” Of course he wasn’t able to tell us why he had to sign in blood but we here at FakingStarWars know a troll when we see one and called the Irishman out on it. With a laugh he fessed up, “You got me, we didn’t sign in blood but we did use red ink.”
We then turned to ask Gleeson about Phasma. What was Hux’s relationship with Phasma like? “They shag… okay not really but I hope they do,” Gleeson said with a huge grin. “Hux and Phasma should be friends with benefits for sure. Just imagine their armored ginger babies…” Gleeson trailed off but he did say this, “In all reality, Phasma and Hux are close. From what I recall from talking with Hablo [Pidalgo], the guy that leads the Lucasfilm Storygroup, is that they were romantically involved prior to the events of Episode VII. Does this mean we will see them hook up in a comic or something, I’m not sure but I really hope I get to kiss Gwendoline. I’ve had a huge crush on her since I saw her on Game of Thrones.” Gleeson ended this with a chuckle and one of Jacen’s cousins who was there with us fist bumped him.
The conversation from there went south and left Star Wars completely, but we did bond and play a few rounds of Smash Bros. on the Wii U with him. He lives up to his nickname of “D-Pad” Gleeson for sure! Any Ganon mains, looking at you Jake Broadbent, should look out!
